Why has my cat been prescribed ofloxacin?
Your veterinarian has prescribed ofloxacin for the treatment of an eye infection caused by bacteria susceptible to ofloxacin. Ofloxacin may be used to treat infections that are resistant to other antibiotics.
How is the medication given?
Ofloxacin is applied directly to your pet’s eye. It is usually administered every 6 hours but this varies case by case.
Your veterinarian will demonstrate how to apply the medication. Just one drop is to be administered per application. If you are unable to apply the medication at home, speak to your veterinarian as soon as possible as your pet’s infection will worsen if they do not receive the treatment.
If you are also applying other medications to the eye, leave at least 10 minutes between applying different products.
When treating the eye, wipe away any discharge prior to applying the medication. Excess medication can be cleaned using a clean cloth 10 minutes after application if needed.
Are there any side-effects or drug interactions?
This medication may cause irritation to the eye and skin surrounding the eye. Contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
How long will my cat need to receive this medication?
Ofloxacin should be administered according to your veterinarian’s instructions. The length of treatment will vary between patients.
How should I dispose of this medication if I don’t use it all?
Dispose of any unused ofloxacin safely – do not flush down the toilet or sink. Ask your veterinary team if they take back medication for disposal. Do not save ofloxacin for future use or give to other pets.
What if I miss a dose or give an extra dose?
If you miss a dose, give the dose as soon as possible but do not give a double dose. Make sure the dose given does not exceed the total recommended dose in any 24-hour period.
My cat is unwell, should I still give the drug?
If your pet is unwell, contact your veterinarian for advice.
What should I do if this medication is accidentally given to another pet or taken by a human?
Ofloxacin should only be given to the cat that it has been prescribed for. If accidentally given to other pets, contact your veterinarian for advice.
If accidentally consumed by a human, speak to your primary care physician or poison control center.
Will my cat need to be monitored while on ofloxacin?
No specific tests are required while your cat is taking ofloxacin, but your veterinarian will need to examine your pet regularly to check that the medication is working.
