Why has my cat been prescribed alprazolam?

Your veterinarian has prescribed alprazolam for the treatment of anxiety, examples include noise/storm phobia, situational phobia (eg going to the veterinary office, thunderstorms, fireworks), separation anxiety, generalized anxiety or another behavioral issue. Your veterinarian will also advise you as to behavior modification strategies or may refer you to a feline behavior specialist for support.

How is the medication given?

Alprazolam is given orally (as tablets). It is usually administered twice daily, but dosing frequency may be adjusted by your veterinarian. Tablets can either be administered directly into your cat’s mouth or along with some food. This medication is best given 1 h before an anxiety provoking event, ie traveling to the veterinarian, etc. Further doses may be required during the anxiety provoking event, but your veterinarian will advise as it’s important to avoid overdosing your pet.

Are there any side-effects or drug interactions?

Side-effects may include sedation, loss of balance, incoordination and increased appetite. Use with caution in animals with liver or kidney disease. Alprazolam has been known to make some pets displaying aggressive behaviors more aggressive, so it should be used with caution in these animals. Alprazolam interacts with many other drugs (eg antifungals, antacids, antihypertensives, other behavior modifying drugs). Tell your veterinarian about any medications or supplements that your pet receives at home. Long term use of this medication can lead to dependence on this drug. Stopping this medication after long term use must be done gradually and with support from your veterinarian. Speak to your veterinarian if you have any concerns.

How long will my cat need to receive this medication?

Alprazolam tablets should be administered according to your veterinarian’s instructions.

How should I dispose of this medication if I don’t use it all?

Dispose of any unused alprazolam safely – do not flush down the toilet or sink. Ask your veterinary team if they take back medication for disposal. Do not save alprazolam for future use or give to other pets.

What if I miss a dose or give an extra dose?

If you miss a dose, give the dose as soon as possible but do not give a double dose. Make sure the dose given does not exceed the total recommended dose in any 24-hour period.

My cat is unwell, should I still give the drug?

If your pet is unwell, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice.

What should I do if this medication is accidentally given to another pet or taken by a human?

Alprazolam should only be given to the pet that it has been prescribed for. If accidentally given to other pets, contact your veterinarian for advice. If accidentally consumed by a human, speak to your primary care physician or poison control center.

Will my cat need to be monitored while on alprazolam?

Your pet may need regular veterinary check-ups whilst on this medication.
